Dr. Magda Abu Ras is a leading Saudi Arabian microbiologist and an influential figure in environmental sustainability. Specializing in the treatment of oil-contaminated soils, she has dedicated her career to developing innovative solutions for pollution reduction. As the Deputy Director of the Saudi Environmental Society (SENS) and founder of the National Program for Environmental Awareness and Sustainable Development, Abu Ras is a driving force in shaping Saudi Arabia’s environmental policies in alignment with Vision 2030.

A Strong Foundation in Science Born in Mecca, Abu Ras pursued an academic path rooted in scientific excellence. She earned two Master’s degrees:

  • Microbiology from King Abdulaziz University
  • Biotechnology and Environmental Microbiology from the University of Surrey

She later obtained a Ph.D. in Environmental Biotechnology from the University of Surrey in 2010, focusing on remediation strategies for oil-contaminated soils. Her research continues to influence environmental strategies aimed at minimizing the ecological impact of industrial activities in Saudi Arabia.

Driving Environmental Change in Saudi Arabia Dr. Abu Ras is widely recognized for her commitment to environmental advocacy and sustainability initiatives. Her journey in activism began in 2006 when she launched the “I Love the Earth” campaign in Jeddah, focusing on pollution reduction and public awareness. Her influence expanded further in 2009 when she was appointed Deputy Director of SENS, playing a pivotal role in shaping national environmental policies.

As an advocate for women’s involvement in environmental leadership, she also served as the Director of the Arab Women’s Environmental Development Program, empowering women to participate in sustainable development initiatives.

In 2012, she launched the Green Homeland, Green Flag campaign, an educational movement aimed at instilling a culture of environmental responsibility among Saudi citizens.

Her expertise was recognized on an international scale when she was selected as a regional scientist for NASA, a testament to her role as a global environmental leader.

A Visionary for Sustainability and Innovation In 2018, Abu Ras founded the National Program for Environmental Awareness and Sustainable Development, which operates under SENS. The initiative aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, focusing on:

  • Education and awareness campaigns

That same year, she spearheaded the Hajj Without Plastic campaign, aimed at reducing plastic waste during the annual Hajj pilgrimage.

Currently, she serves as an Assistant Professor of Biotechnology at King Abdulaziz University, where she continues to inspire and mentor future environmental scientists.

Awards and Recognition Dr. Abu Ras’s contributions to environmental sustainability have earned her several prestigious awards:

  • Arab Women Leaders Award for the Environment (2012) – awarded by the Arab-European Organization for the Environment in Switzerland.
  • Business Award (2017) – presented by Sayidaty Magazine in recognition of her environmental leadership.
  • Takreem Award for Sustainable Environmental Development (2018) – awarded under the patronage of the Emir of Kuwait.
